The New York International Auto Show has lived up to its reputation as a showcase of the vehicles of tomorrow: with Nissan unveiling its fifth generation Altima (pictured) at the event.
The 2013 version of the Nissan Altima includes a four-cylinder, 2.5litre engine with a targeted fuel economy of 31mpg combined. In fact there is a choice between a redesigned 2.5litre DOHC inline four-cylinder engine which has been reworked to be lighter and more efficient, and includes variable valve timing on both the exhaust and intake camshafts; and an award-winning VQ35DE 3.5litre V6 engine. Fuel economy for the V6 model is expected to be 25mpg combined.
Both engines come with a continuously variable transmission that has had 70 per cent of its’ parts redesigned including: a downsized oil pump, lower oil level and low viscosity oil for a 40 per cent reduction in internal friction.
Other features of the new Nissan Altima include noise absorption materials – with a 30 per cent increase in absorption capability; and a redefined multi-line rear suspension.
Also included for the first time is a new active under-steer control system that uses intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators; as well as a vehicle dynamic control/traction control system. Responsive steering, meanwhile, is boosted by a new electronic hydraulic power-assisted steering system; and safety features include: blind spot warning; lane departure warning; and moving object detection.
The Nissan Altima was the second best-selling car in the USA during 2011 and its redesign is set to go on sale in July with a suggested retail price of $21,500.
