Take a Peek at Brembo/Ferrari’s Formula One Brakes

A Formula One racing driver undergoes somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 times the force of gravity when he steps on the brake pedal — which means there’s one insanely capable brake system exerting force beneath the surface. Brake supplier Brembo gives an interesting behind-the-scenes peak at an F1-spec system in the video below.

The video lasts just under two minutes but gives an interesting look at the individual parts of the braking system. There are plenty of big numbers, too: each brake assembly has six-piston calipers, a carbon brake disc that can needs to withstand temperatures of roughly 2200 degrees Fahrenheit, and brake fluid that boils at 635 degrees. The rear calipers are mounted towards the ground for better weight distribution, while the brake pedal is designed to take advantage of deceleration forces to increase the amount of pedal pressure.
