Ford finally ready to Focus on electric cars

ford_focus_plug_in_electric_vehicle Dealers are trained and ready to sell the Focus electric

Plug-in car sales took a bit of a hit last month, as both GM and Nissan plug-in sales declined. The Prius plug-in, however, saw a nice uptick in sales, which makes me wonder. Did Toyota’s plug-in steal some plug-in sales from either Nissan or GM?

Regardless, there is now a new plug-in competitor being added to the plug-in mix. Ford is finally ready to start selling the Ford Focus electric.

When it comes to hybrid cars, the sales have never quite lived up to the Ford hype, although there are encouraging signs. Ultimately, Ford has taken a pretty cautious hybrid approach, as has every automaker outside of Toyota. And that cautious approach is the same approach Ford is going to take with plug-ins.

To start the new Ford Focus electric will only be available in select markets. In most of those markets, only a dealer demo will be available for test rides, and then consumers will order their personal Focus plug-in. While there is nothing wrong with that approach this early in the plug-in game, especially based upon sales so far, that approach certainly won’t lead to any impulse purchases.

Certainly it’s great that Ford has a plug-in in the game. Unfortunately, the new Ford Focus electric car isn’t going to change the plug-in game much.
