Subaru WRX to get an electric turbo?

WRX-Electric-Turbo-i003 The next-generation Subaru Impreza WRX might very well use a revolutionary turbocharger powered by electricity converted from the exhaust gases.

According to Motortrend.com, Subaru has been working on this new technology for years and even took out a patent in 2007. The plan is to get rid of the complex piping and allow the engine to produce power more efficiently with less turbo lag.

The application for the electric turbo remains unknown, but rumours suggest that the Impreza's 1.6L unit (unavailable in North America) is a leading candidate. That's pretty much all the information we know for now, so stay tuned for further details in the coming weeks.
