BMW 7-Series Under Investigation for Gear Shift Issue

2005-bmw-7-series 2002-2008 BMW 7-Series equipped with push-button start are being investigated after 50 complaints of unattended vehicle movement or rollaway have been reported.

The unintentional movement has resulted in 16 crashes and five injuries, prompting NHTSA to upgrade its probe to an engineering analysis, making it one step closer to a possible recall. 122,000 BMW 7-Series could be impacted if there is a recall issued.

Those that have been affected report that they have put their 7-Series in park and pushed engine power button to shut off the engine, but the vehicle went into neutral and as a result and rolled away or moved forward.

The initial investigation opened in August 2011 afters drivers began reporting their vehicles rolling away after being shifted into park. BMW is cooperating with the investigation.
